Lansing is the is the centerpiece of Mid Michigan and the capital of the state of Michigan. The 2010 Census placed Lansing as the fifth largest city in Michigan.

The Lansing Metropolitan Area is often referred to as "Mid-Michigan" due to its focused center around educational, cultural, governmental, commercial, and industrial functionality. Lansing and its surrounding communities are home to two medical schools, one veterinary school, two nursing schools, two law schools—including Western Michigan University and Michigan State University—a Big Ten Conference university, the Michigan State Capitol, the state Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, a federal court, the Library of Michigan and Historical Center, and headquarters of four national insurance companies.

Lansing has an overall Midwestern humid continental climate greatly influenced by the Great Lakes, and is noted as part of USDA Hardiness zone 5b. Summers are very warm and humid, while, Winters are cold with moderate to heavy snowfall. Precipitation is generally greatest during summer but still frequent and significant in the winter season. Snowfall, typically occurs from November to April with an average of 51.1 inches per season which is significantly less than areas to the west such as Grand Rapids.

Downtown Lansing features a historic city market that is considered one of the oldest continuously operating farmers' markets in the United States today. Lansing is for the most part divided into four sections: Eastside, Westside, Northwestside, and Southside. Each area contains a diverse community within itself. The Eastside, located east of the Grand River and north of the Red Cedar River, is the most ethnically diverse side of Lansing, with foreign-born citizens making up more of its population than any other side in the city.

Beyond the economy and education, Lansing celebrates many cultural favorites including the Michigan Pride festival, African American Parade and Heritage Festival, Silver Bells in the City Electric Light Parade, lighting of Michigan's official Christmas tree in front of the State Capitol, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Lansing JazzFest, the Old Town Blues Fest, Old Town's Festival of the Moon and Sun, Old Town Oktoberfest, Blues on the Square, Common Ground Festival, and several others.

There are many points of interest too, including the Library of Michigan and Historical Center, Capital Area District Library, the Lansing Art Gallery, Impression 5 Science Center, Michigan Women's Hall of Fame, R. E. Olds Transportation Museum, Turner-Dodge House, Riverwalk Theatre, Peppermint Creek Theatre Company, Happendance, Greater Lansing Ballet Company, Creole Gallery, Potter Park Zoo, Wharton Center for Performing Arts, and more.

The notoriaty goes on and on from golf courses to people. In 2010 Kiplinger named Lansing as one of the "10 Great Cities for Young Adults". Lansing is a great place to live, work and play.
