Originally Fremont was named Lower Sandusky, however in 1849 the residents changed the name to Fremont, in honor of John C. Frémont.
Fremont is also the home of ninteenth President of the United States - Rutherford B. Hayes, who served as President from 1877 to 1881. Today, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center still remains one of the focal points for the community and is noted as the first presidential library in the United States.
Like Findlay the community of Fremont is recognized for a special designation. Fremont earned the Tree City USA designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Fremont is also quite active in the manufacturing race with a sizable Heinz ketchup plant and several cutlery companies including The Christy Company, Clauss Cutlery Company, Quikut, B.A.P. Manufacturing, and the Ginsu Cutlery Line and Herbrand tools. And, not to be forgotten, Freomont was once the home to a Pioneer Sugar processing plant until it closed in 1997.
Fremont's motto is Where People Come First! This can be seen in all the community activities and life going on every day from the summer Farmer's Market and street flowers to downtown businesses, restaurants, and shopping! Fremont is an energetic town with innovative and friendly people conveniently located off I-80, I-90 and US 20 in Northern Ohio, Fremont is nested on the banks of the Sandusky river.
